The primary purpose for the existence of Canberra is to provide a platform for the main battery. The main battery consists of two, eight inch, three gun turrets. The maintenance and preservation, along with the training of the manning crews, is the duty and responsibility of the 5th Division. This division, under the direct supervision of the Main Batter Officer, maintains turrets one and two, the materials they use, and the men who man them, in a high state of combat readiness.
